Functional Capacity Evaluations
BahgooKoral OT specialise in Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs). An FCE is a comprehensive assessment designed to measure an individual's emotional, cognitive, physical and functional abilities related to specific job tasks or daily activities.

Purposes of an FCE
The primary purpose of an FCE is to determine the individual’s capacity to perform work-related tasks safely and effectively, especially following an injury, illness, or in the context of a disability. They aim to:
-
Determine whether an individual is ready to return to work and in what capacity (e.g., full-duty, modified duty, or alternative roles)
-
Guide employers with implementing reasonable accommodations when needed
-
Compare the individual's functional abilities with the cognitive, physical or psychosocial demands of their job to ensure compatibility
-
Provide baseline data to design or modify treatment programs
-
Provide objective evidence for disability claims and medical boarding
Our FCEs include history taking, medical history and assessments through standardized testing, screening tools, observations and collateral. The assessment usually takes 3-4 hours.
Our Procedures
Work Assessment (shortened FCE)
Shorter versions of FCEs are also done for situations where only specific or limited information is needed, rather than a full comprehensive evaluation. These shorter FCEs focus on targeted areas of functionality, while still providing valuable insights into the individual's abilities. We typically use a shorter FCE for:
-
When a full FCE isn’t necessary, such as for evaluating a specific task or challenge
-
Follow-up assessments, to track progress or confirm readiness for return to work after an initial comprehensive FCE
-
Cases with clear limitations, where a detailed, multi-hour assessment isn’t required
The choice of which FCE is required will depend on the request of the employer/insurer.
